First Signs
Before babies can say their first word, most of them understand certain spoken words and are able to make simple hand gestures. If you like, teach your baby some easy signs for commonly used words. Your baby can use the signs until, and even after, he or she learns to talk. Show your baby the sign as you say the word, and use the sign whenever you use the word during your everyday routine. Be patient and consistent – and be on the lookout for “signs” that your baby is communication with you.
